This morning we got up to stormy weather. We had heard the rain all night in our Utah home and figured we would not be able to get in any running or cycling. Later in the morning the rain stopped so we decided to go out for a 6 mile run on the Provo canyon trail. It was unseasonally cold since even with jackets on we were feeling a bit cool. Up on the mountains we could see some SNOW from the storm!

Later in the afternoon the sun finally came out so Franz headed out on for a bike ride. He was fooled into riding with only short sleeved jersey and cycling shorts. But it was now 60 degrees so it seemed okay. He had intended to ride up Squaw Peak, but having done that four times in the last two days, he decided to go further and ride up the Alpine Loop. That road goes to over 8,000 feet so he figured he would be riding up by the snow we could see from the valley floor.

As he continued to climb, the temperatures kept dropping. heI finally reached the summit and noticed the temperature was now down to 49 degrees. He had tried to do a good time up the climb and had set a new record.

He still felt warm enough due to the climb but the descent down the Alpine Loop was COLD. HeI should have brought a jacket. He did make one stop to warm up a bit and take this photo with his iPhone to send to Ann. You can see a little snow in the distance on the hill top.

Being Labor Day, there was a lot more traffic than we usually find on this rode. This was especially true from Sundance down where Franz had many cars behind so he descended down quickly to not be in their way. That made me even more cold. In fact he was cold all the way back home. Quite an unusal ride for this time of the year.

It was a triple sports day. It was not that hot but we decided to call it our Tri Fry. We started out this morning with a 5 mile run up the Provo Canyon trail.

In the early afternoon we went golfing. We had not been golfing since last fall so it was a bit of a learning experience. We found ourselves in the rough too often.

After a few holes we finally started to get some good drive shots.

And the freeway shots started to get a bit straighter.

After several holes Franz finally shot par.

Ann lines up for this pressure putt.

To complete our triple sports day we took a ride on the tandem up South Fork, for a 26 mile ride.

As we were headed home the clouds started to darken and we caught some rain the last couple of miles. It was just enough rain to cool off this Tri Fry day.

Ann and I met John in the lobby of the hotel at 5 am to drive to the start of the race. I don’t recall a 10K that started so early, but this one started at 6 am so we had to leave around 5. Actually we could have left a bit later because it was only about 15 minute drive. Ann and I did a little jogging around to warm up, as did John. My plan for this race was to run with Ann and try to pace here. I am not in that good of running shape since I have been mostly focussed on cycling.

Soon after 6 am they started the race. We all had timing chips on our shoes so I was not too worried about moving up to the front of the field but some slower runners did that which forced us to try to weave our way around them the first couple of miles.

We had a very good pace for the first three miles due to the eleveation drop, with the 2nd mile at a 8:15 pace, which may have been too fast for Ann who normally runs this race distance closer to a 9:00 minute pace. But she held on very well and we finished the race with a final time of 56:13, which was good enough for Ann to place 8th in her age group. John finished with another sub 40 minute 10K, so he did very well. We all thought the last two miles were hard becasue they were flat or maybe a bit uphill, which seemd hard after running down for the first three.
